The Different Kinds of Water

Water

We know its good for us. We are all familiar with being told to drink 8 glasses of water a day. And I feel most of us understand the reasons why its good for us.

But what isn’t talked about enough, is the kind of water and the different types of water.

Yes, there is Dasani and Fiji and Evian. That is bottled water, which is one type.

So what are the other types of water and what is the kind of water we want to be consuming?

In all reality the best water we will ever find will come straight from the earth. A natural spring of running water. Where the water is clear, there is thriving vegetation all around, you see vibrant green moss, and possibly other animals drinking from it too.

The earth is the best filter.

Now a days a lot of us are drinking tap water. Unfortunately us humans haven’t done too good of a job yet of properly cleaning water like the earth does. ( we are still learning ) When tested, tap water comes back showing all kinds of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, over the counter and prescription drugs. ( this is even after the filtering we do )

Yeah – that is scary. I certainly don’t want to be putting that in my body. I hope you feel the same.

Typically once we realize this we either buy bottled water or go to the hardware store and get a filter we can attach to the faucet. I’ve done this, and absolutely a step in the right direction.

My hope however is that I can help you skip some of the steps I had to take.

But first – whats the draw back of bottled water?

Well, the majority of it is actually tap water that’s been sitting in plastic. The plastic itself isn’t natural, it is full of chemicals as well. So we are actually adding even more chemicals into the water when we bottle it. And even more so if that plastic bottle has been in the sun. And then if we want to add on the environmentally friendly part . . . really not good for the environment.

What about the filters from the hardware store?

Some of these are pretty good. And do a decent job of removing a lot of the unwanted stuff. They can be great to put in the kitchen. I would also recommend getting a good quality one for the shower as we typically shower in hot water which opens our pores – so our skin absorbs that water like a sponge.

However – what I found after using a kitchen and shower filter for about a year was that I had to replace the filters often, they didn’t remove all the unwanted stuff, and when compared to water that you can get at a natural spring, it wasn’t living water anymore. Not sure if you have ever experienced the water at a natural spring, but it is vibrant. It is full of life, air bubbles, and tastes amazing. It is full of all those good minerals from the earth.

Which gets me to Reverse Osmosis filters. A lot of us have these too. And these are even a few steps above the hardware filters. They filter the water very well. But again, the water is getting stripped of the minerals our bodies need and it isn’t living water anymore.

When testing the pH of tap water, bottled water, etc to fresh natural spring water they are very different. Spring water has an Alkaline pH where as the others have a very acidic pH.

For those not familiar with pH and what it means for our bodies, our bodies thrive in an alkaline environment. It is in an acidic environment when we begin to see diseases taking place. This is why we are hearing and seeing these ‘miracle patients’ healing their bodies from cancer by pumping their bodies full of alkaline foods and water. Disease can not live in an alkaline environment.

My suggestions

If you are completely new this ‘water needing to be filtered’ thing – do a little more research. Look up filters online, stop by the hardware store, talk with those around you, and maybe grab a couple filters for the kitchen and shower.

If you’ve done that already, or want to skip that step, here is an awesome link that shows you all of the natural spring locations in your area where you can go collect your own fresh spring water straight from the earth.

For me where I am currently at, the closest natural spring is about an hour and half away. Same days I am okay with making that trip – others not so much. Plus I don’t currently have a way to be able to use this water I collect from the spring to shower in.

Which lead me to continue investigating other options. The water I currently use at home is from a well and Reverse Osmosis is used. So the fear of chemicals etc isn’t there in the extent as city water. But the alkalinity and minerals aren’t there either. Fortunately, I did find a solution that provides me that spring like water in my home so I wouldn’t have to head out to the spring to get it.

Now I will say, and this is just me, in time I will find a home that is much closer to a natural spring and get my water from there. Straight from nature, straight from the source is always best.

In the meantime, if you are like me and want to bring the spring to you – follow the links below to learn about the filters I use in my home for drinking water and my shower and listen to what some scientists are saying about water quality as well.

Overcoming Addictive Habits

Changing Habits – Shifting Perspectives

How do we do that?

Addiction can actually encompass way more than what we may think. Most of us are familiar with the addictions to drugs, alcohol, and caffeine. But what about other things?

First – what is addiction?

You can look it up on Google, but the definition I found used the word addiction in the description . . . haha . . so . . .

Here’s my definition:

Anything we do repeatedly either on a daily basis or regular basis in a semi unconscious mindset, therefore making it unhealthy for us. Something we habitually do that may not actually be serving us for the better and may be keeping us stuck in some form or another. Where we don’t have a full understanding of why we are doing it and there is that underlined reason not fully at the surface yet.

Here are some examples outside of the typical ones:

  • snacking
  • over exercising
  • too much of even a healthy food
  • our cell phones
  • certain relationships
  • negative thought patterns ( this is a big one. Self sabotaging mind chatter. Every person deals with this )

In essence, anything we feel we have to do to find relief in some sort of way. ( finding relief in and of itself is not bad and can be a very healthy way of moving through a difficult time, but lets make sure what we end up doing to find that relief is through something that benefits us in the long term )

If we are having to ‘do something’ to feel good, something might be off.

So how do we break the habitual pattern if we feel we might have one, or maybe a few?

Well we all know about the cold turkey method. But who wants to hear a child scream when you rip the lollipop from their fingers . . . not me. That creates more issues.

So lets try this instead:

It might sound counter intuitive at first, but hear me out, cause it works. And can work very fast.

Don’t worry about stopping your pattern just yet ( unless it is immediately threatening your life, then seek further guidance ). Be aware of when you’re doing it and then begin to find something else similar, yet better, to take its spot. So when you see yourself go to grab or do your pattern, switch it out for this new thing.

Add in to crowd out

For instance, I really like peanut butter. There’s nothing wrong with it. Its healthy. Full of healthy fats. However, I came to a point where I was using it like a box of cookies and out of almost complete unawareness. It became that Oreo I’d go grab when I was feeling low or so focused on something else that all the sudden I was in the kitchen scooping some up. I would scoop out a huge chunk of peanut butter from the jar ( it was even homemade most of the time ), and then add coconut syrup, coconut sugar, and some cacao nibs. So again, nothing unhealthy here, but the way I was treating it was. And I would do it multiple times a day.

There are many layers to why we do what it is we do. But to gently transition myself out of an unhealthy pattern, I started by replacing the peanut butter with coconut cream.

A healthy fat and just as delicious, but with the extra goodness of its incredible health benefits; but enough of a shift to bring even more awareness to the cycle and give me momentum to continue in the same direction.

It’s not the food, person, or thing that is necessarily bad . . . Its the intention behind the act that we want to focus on and make sure is pure.

We don’t always have to completely eliminate it either. Now, if your habit is very detrimental to your health and has no positive aspects to it, then yes, start creating these gentle shifts with an end goal of completely removing it.

However, if it is not something all that bad in itself, then it’s not about eliminating it all together. Instead, its about shifting the intention, the reason behind why it is you are doing what you’re doing, to make sure the act isn’t actually covering up a deeper reason you might be avoiding looking at.

Bringing awareness to these areas, and breaking these cycles, allows for stress and worry to fall away. It makes space, and opens up time, for new and better things to take place that bring about more joy and love into your life.

Breaking addictive cycles can be hard, and take a lot of time, patience, and strength.

If you feel you have a pattern that needs to be broken, or maybe you have been trying already to break a pattern, but haven’t been able to fully follow through yet, sometimes we need some guidance, accountability, and support to get us through.

16 Benefits of Meditation

To start – What is Meditation and how do we do it?

A lot of us actually already do it. We just didn’t bother giving it a name, because it was just something that happened ( like breathing or our heart beating. It just happens without effort or very little )

Meditation is simply being conscious and aware of our thoughts and letting them pass through our mind like clouds in the sky without any attachment to them.

At some points this is easy. At other times our minds are filled with so much noise that momentum is impossible to stop until we physically remove ourselves from any outward chaos and spend some time alone in nature. ( at least that’s what I do )

The Goal of Meditation

To return ourselves back to a state of presence. To be back fully in the present moment.

A lot of the time our thoughts are anchored in the past or future. But in reality, all there ever is, is the now. The present moment.

If you are completely new to this concept and have yet to feel you have control over your thoughts – the best way to begin is by simply noticing that we are breathing. Notice the air going through your nose on an inhale, your lungs and belly expanding outward, feel free to hold your breathe in for a second or two if that feels good, and then notice the warmer air passing through your nose on the exhale and your belly softening as the air is moved out of your body.

A lot of us breathe into our chests/rib cage. This is fine, but it actually puts strain on our shoulders and neck. If you notice this is how youre breathing, play around with expanding your belly out on the inhale, instead of your chest.

Sit tall with a straight spine as much as possible.

The goal here is to shift the focus. Instead of being stuck in our head with our thoughts, we put our focus and attention on a different part of our body.

We are separate from our thoughts. So when you notice a thought arise in your mind, simply acknowledge it, and then allow your mind to move on to either the next thought or maybe a space of stillness.

There really isn’t a right or wrong way to do this. At first it might seem incredibly difficult, especially later in the day. Our minds are full of information, conversations, words, ideas, problems etc.

I find it easier first thing in the morning when my mind is still relatively clear, or if I wake with a racing mind, getting myself outside into nature away from traffic, people, and all responsibilities before I do anything else.

Starting the day with a clear mind, and a feeling of control and awareness of our thoughts makes for an easier, more grounded, peaceful, and more enjoyable day.

Its when we feel a lack of control of our thoughts that we feel a lack of control over everything else in our reality.

So simply tuning in for even just a few minutes and feeling present and in your body first thing, makes a world of difference.

Namaste

The Yogic Symbol

Like most things, at least for me, we don’t fully understand them until after we have experienced them personally. It might make since to some extent when described to us, but its not until after fully experiencing it in our own realities that we make that connection of ‘oh, that’s what that means,’ or ‘ okay, now I get it.’

Here is the introduction to the symbol. The description and explaining of these different levels of the spiritual practice that yoga is, so you plant some seeds for in the future when you look back after some time and experience has past and you can say, okay, now I get it.

If yoga has come into your life you most likely have seen this symbol. The Om ( Aum) symbol.

It wasnt until I was at my teacher training when I was introduced to the deeper meaning of this symbol, and then not until a couple months out of training that I came back across it, reread my notes, and had that ‘Oh, I get it’ realization. It’s like the saying goes, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. My training started about a year before my ‘scheduled’ training. My world was taking me through these different states of consciousness so I would be able to understand them, and then explain them. But I had to fully complete/experience each level and then come back to it, to understand what I had just gone through.

So here we go!

THE LOWER CURVE #1:

This is the most common state of consciousness that us human beings live in. The Waking State. Where our awareness is turned outward and we experience through our senses.

THE UPPER CURVE #2:

This is unconsciousness. Where we desire nothing, and dream nothing. A state of deep sleep.

THE MIDDLE CURVE #3:

This is a state of consciousness in-between wakefulness and dreaming. Where we are turned inward, and our dreaming self witnesses the view of the world behind the lids of the eyes.

THE TOP DOT#4:

This is where our consciousness is neither inward, nor outward, but in-between. A place of unity, stability, of coming to rest. It is an utterly quiet, peaceful, and blissful state.

This is end point or the ultimate goal of yoga. This state illuminates all three other states.

There is also a common phrase in yoga that explains this final stage well.

It reads- Chitta Vritti Nirodhah ( the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind)

It is in this state of stillness of the mind that everything else becomes still as well. Where we find peace within ourselves, and therefore peace in our outer world as well.

Blue Green Algae

Holy Moly guys – I went to the store to stock up on Chlorella ( and chocolate … ) and next to the chlorella container was Blue Green Algae.

It had caught my eye before but I always stuck with my known Chlorella and Spirulina.

So . . .

Why bother consuming this insanely green powder?

That amount will last you awhile! a little goes a long way.

Or if you are the online shopper type . . . Go Here for the one I recommend.

If you are wondering how to incorporate this awesomeness into you life . . . check out This Blog Post and use Blue Green Algae in place of the Chlorella.
